Zenéjüket jó szívvel ajánlanám azoknak, akik a Joy Division köpenyzsebéből kibújt nyers, modorosságtól mentes post-punkot szeretik, azt a valódi emberektől valódi emberekig hidat nyitó fajtát.

A szövegek világa intelligens, érzékeny, a nehéz érzésekkel bátran szembenéző, a társadalmunk sötét oldalait is világosan látó-láttató, éles, -néhol karikatúraszerű- tükör.

Black Rain – Surgical-edged Post-punk from Sunderland
Recently, following a simple follow request, I received a very sweet message from a band asking if I would write a short feature about them—a task I was more than happy to accept. I would wholeheartedly recommend their music to anyone who loves raw, unpretentious post-punk that crawled straight out of the coat pocket of Joy Division: the kind that builds a genuine bridge from real people to real people. They certainly won't be disappointed in Black Rain.

Hailing from North East England, the beautifully named trio Black Rain (Scott | Josh | Mik) sprouted from the still-beating, living heart of post-punk with a true DIY ethos and energetic live shows. Their slogan points to a unique threshold: "Too gothic to be punk; too punk to be gothic." It is an apt description, yet the outcome is far more than a mere blend of the two genres. Rawness, coldness, and the bleak breath of industrial landscapes permeate their music and lyrics. On the map of dark music, I would put them on a par with America's Lathe Of Heaven, Australia's Body Maintenance, and, within our small Hungarian universe, Fetish Section.

They first emerged into the public eye in 2024, subsequently playing numerous live shows—including set times in Whitby alongside scene giants such as The Chameleons. Their aesthetic leans into a minimalist, sleek "no image" style, keeping the focus entirely on their creative concept and the music itself.
In 2025, they released their self-titled debut album, featuring five studio tracks and four live recordings captured at Sunderland's legendary Bunker practice and venue space. The music is the aforementioned raw, stripped-back post-punk: underneath guitars that alternate between heavy crunch and chiming clarity, snake-like synth lines wind through (an added contribution from their producer), backed by technical basslines and relentless, elemental drums.

The lyrical world is intelligent and sensitive—a sharp, at times caricature-like mirror that courageously confronts heavy emotions and clearly sees (and reflects) the darker sides of our society. For instance, the provocatively titled Satanists is not about glorifying the cloven-hoofed lord of hell, but rather about how selfishly, heartlessly, and warped our society functions, as though the whole thing were already being run by the devil. The album itself received praise from both Mick Mercer and John Robb.
To get a feel for the atmosphere of their live performances, the video recorded at The Bunker in March 2024 offers a great glimpse: energetic, cohesive, and sweeping.

Prior feedback has mostly revolved around descriptors like rough, hard, cold, and bare, but with our Eastern European wiring, we are more likely to perceive this as genuine and sincere. What makes it exceptionally valuable is the socially critical intelligence paired with this almost frigid rawness. This was a natural baseline during the classic post-punk era, before the main emphasis of the dark music universe shifted elsewhere. I do not view it as mere nostalgia that this attitude is returning in these oppressive, rapidly changing times—times that carry who-knows-what new beginnings. For healing, the precise accuracy of a scalpel is required...
